Introduction to the Special Issue

This special issue collects a few top papers from the Work-in-Progress (WIP) Session of the 2009 IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS), which present the latest on-going research ideas and results in real-time systems. 24 papers have been selected for presentation in the WIP session of RTSS'09, out of which five (5) best papers have been chosen according to reviews from the program committee to appear in this special issue. As energy management is still a grand challenge in computing systems, the first two papers are on managing energy consumption in real-time systems. The first paper (Chantem, Hu, Poellabauer, Yi and Zhang) addresses energy-aware adaptive CPU scheduling in wireless networked real-time systems and the second paper (Quan and Ren) presents schemes that simultaneously manage leakage power and thermal constraints. Another active research area that received lots of attention is how to efficiently exploiting multicore processors in real-time systems. The third paper (Andersson, Easwaran and Lee) studies the execution time increase problem due to memory bus contention in multicore systems and the fourth paper (Lee, Easwaran, Shin and Lee) presents multiprocessor real-time scheduling schemes while considering urgency and concurrency of tasks. The final paper (Lee, Lee, Shyshkalov, Seo, Hong and Shin) addresses interrupt scheduling problem for predictable real-time behaviors of processes. We hope that you will find this issue stimulating and instructive.

Our special thanks go to all of the authors, the RTSS'09 WIP program committee and the SIGBED Review Editors.
