Introduction to the Special Issue

This special issue collects the papers and invited presentations that appeared in the 10th International Workshop on Real-time Networks (RTN), held in Porto, Portugal in July 2011. The goal of the RTN workshop series is to bring together industrialists, academics and other experts who have shared interests in real-time communications and computer networking. The workshop provides a forum for participants to present and discuss new ideas, new research directions and to review current trends in this area. This year 15 regular paper submissions were received and 6 papers were selected for inclusion in these proceedings. In addition to thanking the practitioners and academic researchers who submitted their work to RTN, for their help in the selection of the papers much credit is due to the program committee members consisting of Luis Almeida, Leandro Buss Becker, Gianluca Cena, Jean-Dominique Decotignie, Zdenek Hanzalek, Sheikh Imran, Anis Koubaa, Pau Marti, Daniel Mosse, Luca Mottola, Binoy Ravindran, Michael Schwarz, Ye-Qiong Song, Eduardo Tovar and Andreas Willig.

In addition, the workshop also featured a keynote speech, industry lecture and expert panel discussion session. For giving engaging and topical presentations of a very high quality, special thanks must also go to the keynote speaker Lucia Lo Bello and the industry lecture speaker Sйrgio Penna; and also to Christian Fraboule and Hermann Kopetz for joining the speakers for the closing panel discussion session. Finally, thanks must also go to the additional RTN session chairs and rapporteurs Mбrio Alves, Claro Noda, Vikram Gupta, Hossein Fotouhi, Ricardo Severino and Marcelo Sobral, for helping to make sure the workshop ran smoothly and (mostly) on time, and that the discussions were well documented.
