Introduction to the Special Issue

This special issue features papers that appeared in the 3rd International Workshop on Networks of Cooperating Objects (CONET 2012), held in Beijing, China in April 2012. CONET 2012 was the third in a series of highly successful annual events under the umbrella of the CONET Network of Excellence, co-located with the CPSWeek. The CPSWeek brings together five leading conferences (HSCC, ICCPS, IPSN, RTAS, HiCoNS) and workshops on various aspects on the R&D of cyber-physical systems: Embedded Systems, Hybrid Systems, Real-Time and Sensor Networks.

The CONET workshop program included ten high quality papers that were selected after a rigorous reviewing process by the Program Committee and was complemented by a keynote speech by NSF Career awarded Kamin Whitehouse (University of Virginia, USA) on A computational approach to energy-efficient buildings and an industrial talk given by Nic Lane, from the Mobile Sensing Systems Group at Microsoft Research Asia. To wrap up the workshop, a panel discussed the topic Smart Cities: Playground for Cooperating Objects? . The panel included the keynote speaker, Thiemo Voigt (Swedish Institute of Computer Science, Sweden) and Tarek Abdelzaher (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA).

Four long papers and four short papers are included in this special issue, covering several interesting topics, namely detection and classification of radio interference, opportunistic packet forwarding, event-based household energy consumption prediction, HVAC control based on room occupancy, reliable data collection in mobile scenarios, non-intrusive bus snooping for tracing radio events, collaborative localization of Bluetooth devices and applicability of network coding in wireless sensor networks.

We hope you enjoy the reading!
