Special Issue on 7th Workshop on Adaptive and Reconfigurable Embedded Systems (APRES 2015)

Introduction to the Special Issue

The 7th Workshop on Adaptive and Reconfigurable Embedded Systems (APRES 2015) continued the series of successful events that started in 2008. It took place on April 13, 2015, in Seattle, USA, and was held in conjunction with the CPSWeek 2015.

A system is said to be adaptive if it responds to environmental changes such as hardware/software defects, resource changes, and non-continual feature usage, in ways that extend the area of operation and improve the efficiency in the use of system resources. But designing and developing adaptive systems raises a number of challenges, from modeling and analysis to testing, including the need to deal with trade-offs between added complexity and achieved efficiency, when defining architectures, algorithms and support middleware. Therefore, the objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers from the embedded systems community at large, to share and discuss their work, new concepts and novel ideas to address these problems in the area of adaptive and reconfigurable embedded systems.

This year the workshop program included a keynote presentation entitled "Medical Application Platforms for On-Demand Medical Cyber-Physical Systems", by Insup Lee from the University of Pennsylvania, and 10 peer-reviewed papers organized in four sessions, of which 9 were effectively presented. Session 1 was about "Adaptive mechanisms for distributed embedded systems", session 2 included papers about "Scheduling and replication-based techniques for adaptivity", session 3 was devoted to "Hardware-based adaptation of embedded systems" and, finally, there was a special session entitled "CodeStream: Combining Network Coding and Scheduling for adaptive communications", which was organized in the scope of the CodeStream project.

I would like to thank all people who contributed to the success of the workshop, namely authors for submitting and presenting their work, PC members for their review effort and participants for ensuring lively discussions. I also want to thank the steering committee members for their support and assistance in the organization, with special thanks to Luís Almeida for organizing the CodeStream session and to Insup Lee for being available to give a very interesting keynote speech.
