Special Issue on 4th International Workshop on Real-time Computing and Distributed Systems in Emergent Applications (REACTION 2016)

Introduction to the Special Issue

As program chairs, we have the pleasure to introduce this special issue dedicated to the 4th edition of REACTION, the International Workshop on Real-time Computing and Distributed Systems, that was held in Porto on December 29th, 2016 as a co-located event to RTSS. REACTION aims at presenting contributions with a clear applied vision around, but not limited to, the challenging problems in the integration of real-time computing and distributed systems. The focus of the event is at the confluence area between distributed systems and real-time applications, that includes communication middleware, operating systems, virtualization technology, modeling or timely operation in distributed systems, among others.

REACTION featured keynote speaker prof. Paulo Pedreiras from University of Aveiro (Portugal) that presented the state of the art on deterministic and flexible communications for cyber-physical systems, pointing at the trends, challenges and opportunities.

In addition to this keynote, eight papers were accepted that ranged from middleware design and performance for distributed systems development, to scheduling in distributed systems and in multicore platforms. The REACTION Program Committee contained 17 researchers in the above domains that provided quality reviews for each of the contributions.

We would like to warmly thank all members of the Program Committee for their support, valuable effort, contributions, and quality reviews.

Finally, we also would like to recognize the work of all the authors of the submitted papers, as well as thanking the attendees and participants who contributed in making REACTION possible one more year.

29th November 2016.
REACTION'16 chairs:
Marisol García-Valls, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain
Luis Lino Ferreira, Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal
