There is a growing interest in embedded real-time virtualization within the Industry driven by the gradual shift to multicore processor and the more complex and inter-connected environment. Virtualization offer solutions for hardware consolidation, where multiple systems can be integrated onto a single multicore machine. Moreover, the ability offered to manage mixed criticality, including security aspects makes virtualization an attractive technology for future automation systems.
The first Workshop on Virtualization for Real-Time Systems (VtRES 2013) provides a forum for researchers and technologists to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their work and contributions, and set future directions in virtualization for real-time embedded systems. The workshop is held in conjunction with the 19th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications RTCSA 2013.
This special issue includes seven papers which cover a wide range of research topics including performance evaluation of virtualization techniques, I/O management, security issues, multicore architectures, temporal isolation, network communication, hardware/software support and mixed criticality.
