Special Issue on 5th Workshop on Adaptive and Reconfigurable Embedded Systems (APRES 2013)

Introduction to the Special Issue

The 5th Workshop on Adaptive and Reconfigurable Embedded Systems (APRES 2013) was
held in Philadelphia in conjunction with the Cyber-Phisical systems week. The purpose of
this workshop is to provide an open forum to discuss new and on-going research that is
centered on the idea of adaptability as first class citizen and that considers the trade-offs
between flexibility and complexity.

I would like to thank everybody who contributed to the success of the workshop, which
consisted in a keynote presentation titled “Adapting to the Human in Cyber-physical
Applications” by Tarek Abdelzaher and three regular sessions, with a total of 10
peer-reviewed papers.

The APRES 2013 workshop could not have been organized without tremendous effort
from many individuals. I would like to thank all the authors who submitted their work and
the program committee for their review effort. I would especially like to thank Tarek
Abdelzaher for accepting to be our keynote speaker and the Steering committee members
Luis Almeida, Karl-Erik Årzén, Sebastian Fischmeister, Insup Lee and Julián Proenza for
their support and assistance in the organization.

I hope that you enjoyed APRES 2013, and found the technical program interesting and
stimulating as much as I did. And I hope you will consider contributing to the 2014 edition
of the workshop that will be held in Berlin in 2014.
